How can I withhold a credit check until I have gotten closer to being hired?

I don%26#039;t want perspective employers to dig into my report and lower my scores simply because they can with little or no interest in hiring. Is there anything anywhere that upholds my right to privacy until such time as the interview process is complete (contingent on the OK from the credit bureaus)?

There is different types of credit reports that can be run. In fact a place of employment cannot do a credit report that will effect your score, it is against the law in most states. Also, most of the time you will have to sign an agreement that they maybe able to check it.

You should have to sign a release authorizing them to review your credit. Don%26#039;t give anyone your social security number - they they can%26#039;t pull it!

If I were you, I%26#039;d simply ask them not to run your credit unless they were planning on making you an offer. Since it costs money to run a credit report, I doubt most companies do so until they%26#039;ve found the right candidate for the job. You can simply explain that you don%26#039;t want your score to be lowered by too many inquiries into your credit.

I don%26#039;t blame you, its terrible. Maybe you can ask them if they can wait until a certain phase of the hiring process.
